The autumn epidemic season in Ukraine has already begun. According to experts’ forecasts, this year it will be somewhat more difficult. These are seasonal outbreaks of influenza, SARS and COVID-19.
In the current epidemic season, doctors note, the most vulnerable category will be the elderly and those with chronic diseases. In order to avoid serious complications of the coronavirus, it is worth getting vaccinated.
Currently, this is the only way to avoid danger.
Medical scientists have proven that it is the elderly who are most vulnerable to the coronavirus, which has mutated again. The fact is that they usually have more than one chronic disease, and their immune system weakens with age.
“The basic course of vaccination is two vaccinations and one booster. It is given five months after the second vaccination,” explains the Chief State Sanitary Doctor of Ukraine Ihor Kuzin.
However, in order to protect themselves from a severe course of the disease, elderly people should get two more boosters – this is the fourth and fifth vaccination with a break of 5 months after the previous one. It is vaccination that can prevent fatal consequences.
This should be remembered if you have elderly relatives. They usually get infected from younger family members, so in fact their safety depends on you.
Note that the vaccination against COVID-19 does not protect against the flu and vice versa, so it is worth doing two. Vaccination against coronavirus in Ukraine is free even despite the war. The flu vaccine can be purchased at pharmacies.
According to infectious disease doctor Fedor Lapiy, vaccines against influenza and against Covid-19 can be administered in one visit to the doctor. In addition, according to immunologists, simultaneous vaccination against both viruses is completely safe.
Alyona Gerasimova, head of the USAID project Building a sustainable public health system and director of the Pact in Ukraine, notes that an information campaign is currently underway in Ukraine, the purpose of which is to raise public awareness.
So that people understand why vaccination is needed, why they should not be afraid of it and how exactly it can protect the elderly from the risks of this year’s epidemic season.
