“Ugly humor and discrimination”: how Ukrainians reacted to the joke of “Kvartal 95” about resettlement from Skadovsk

Ukrainians were outraged by the humorous skit by the actors of “Quarter 95”, in which they portrayed a displaced woman from Skadovsk, temporarily occupied by the Russians, who moved to Transcarpathia and tries to communicate in Ukrainian.

The scene was shown on December 31, 2023 in the “Kvartal 95” program on the “1+1” TV channel.

According to the script, the main character comes from Skadovsk and does not speak Ukrainian well. During communication with a Transcarpathian, she distorts words, giving them a “funny” sound.

In particular, when asked why she used to speak Russian, the heroine explains that she is “siSkadovska!” (from Skadovska), and she “spoke in Russian” all her life.

In response to the joke, Mayor Skadovsk called on the directors of “Kvartal 95” to apologize to Ukrainians. Editor-in-chief of the Kherson edition “Kavun.City” Yevgenia Virlych filed a complaint against “1+1” to the Journalistic Ethics Commission.

In addition to the failed joke, some of the users were outraged by the fact that Iryna Gatun, who performed the role of the “displaced woman” until 2019, rested in the temporarily occupied Crimea.

In the end, the media holding “1+1 media” apologized to the viewers and promised to remove the excerpt from the network.

How Ukrainians reacted

Mayor of Skadovsk Oleksandr Yakovlev reacted to such “jokes” with indignation and initiated a flash mob “Skadovsk speaks Ukrainian”.

“Petliura was right when he said: “Moscow lice are not as scary to us as our Ukrainian nits.”

Probably, jokes about “nipples” from Skadovsk seem very witty to someone. But let’s leave it to the conscience of the directors. I hope they will have the strength to apologize to Ukrainians.” said the mayor.

Yakovlev added that Skadovsk is still under occupation, so the people of Skadovsk do not need ridicule, but support.

“I know that many of our people were Russian speakers, but everyone understands Ukrainian well and speaks Ukrainian well.

That’s why I’m launching a flash mob “Skadovsk speaks Ukrainian”. I suggest to all residents of Skadovsk to support him and read something in Ukrainian. Regardless of where you are now, I know that in your heart you love Skadovsk”– added the mayor.

In the video, he read Hryhoriy Chubai’s poem “It’s not easy to live in the twentieth century.”

After the release of the scandalous program, the editor-in-chief of the Kherson edition “Kavun.City” Evgenia Virlych filed a complaint about “1+1” with the Journalistic Ethics Commission.

She noted that in the humorous program there is “direct and open discrimination” of residents of the south and east of Ukraine on the basis of language.

“I also note that in the room where a man and a woman are talking, the man is presented more attractively than the woman: he is reserved, patriotic, communicates in Ukrainian; she is Russian-speaking, she is laughed at because of the clumsiness of the language. Similar positioning in the public field (channel “1 +1″ has a wide reach) demeans a woman, in particular a woman who left the occupied territory”, – Yevgenia added.

The editor-in-chief of “Ukrainian Pravda” also reacted to the scandal Sevgil Musaeva.

“Jokes about Skadovsk are not just ugly, low-grade humor. It is absolute detachment and misunderstanding of the realities in which the country lives. It is disrespect and devaluation of the experience that millions of your compatriots have gone through.

Do you know what it’s like to be displaced or lose your home in your own country? I know because it happened to me 10 years ago. And on the morning of January 1, 2024, for example, I was looking for a photo of the music school I studied at in Kerch, because I periodically dream about it. The journalist believes that laughing at the displaced people, who lost everything, but tried to preserve life and dignity, is “baseness and bottom”.

“Probably the directors of the show will say that there are no such topics that a comedian cannot joke about, and that humor is universal. Maybe, but not when it affects and traumatizes millions of people in your country who already do not consider themselves whole.

Because together with the house, they stole a part of you, your memories and even your DNA. And now they want to emphasize your inferiority once again by the fact that you don’t speak Ukrainian well,” – Sevgil added.

In the comments to her post, the journalist Yanina Sokolova asked the ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets.

“We are waiting for your statement to the National Council and the SBU regarding the inspection of the activities of the Quarter. As was the case with your actions regarding the statements of Iryna Farion”, – Yanina wrote.

At the same time, the network drew attention to the fact that until 2019, the actress Iryna Gatun, who plays the “woman from Skadov”, rested in the temporarily occupied Crimea.

The photo of the actress from Crimea, in particular, was published by the communicator of the Small Academy of Sciences Leda Kosmachevska.

The number about Skadovsk also outraged the journalist Maryna Danyliuk-Yermolaeva.

The full episode of “New Year’s Quarter” will be reedited and released on the channel’s platforms without this number.

Studio “Quarter 95” also apologized to the audience, adding that in their programs “they joke about themselves and their own shortcomings.”

“Many were outraged by the pun written by the authors, which occurs when saying the phrase “I’m from Skadovsk”. If the funny pun came from the name of any other Ukrainian city where people spoke more Russian, it would be the name of this city.

He also stated that the main message of this number was that “there is no shame in making a mistake”, but it is a shame not to speak one’s native language.
