“Ukrainian culture has nothing to defend”: in Lithuania, funds are collected for Ukrainian museums

Action in support of Ukraine “Ukrainian culture has nothing to defend itself” (“Ukrainos kultura neturiu kuo gintis”) began on November 28 in the House of Signatories of the National Museum of Lithuania. Collection of funds for Ukrainian museums will continue until December 26.
This was reported by Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LTR).
With the collected funds, they plan to purchase restoration equipment and materials. All tools for the preservation of cultural heritage will be sent to the National Museum of the History of Ukraine, from where they will be transferred to other Ukrainian museums.

The Director General of the Lithuanian National Museum was present at the presentation of the initiative Ruta Kachkutewhich called on Lithuanians to join in supporting Ukraine:
“It is not by chance that we present this support action in the House of Signatories, where the flag from Bakhmut, which got to Lithuania from the front, is hung. This place symbolizes the values that are important for us and for Europe, and for which Ukraine is currently fighting – freedom, democracy and civil rights. We urge the people of Lithuania not to remain indifferent witnesses of cultural vandalism and destruction by Russia – the history of our own country shows how important it is to preserve the past for the sake of the future“.

The general director of LRT and a member of the board of the European Broadcasting Union also joined the presentation Monika Harbachiauskaite-Budriene and the founder of the “Strong Together” project Edmundas Yakylaitis.
“History does not die, as Ukrainians fight today, but it can disappear or be destroyed. This initiative will help protect Ukrainian heritage from Russian terror, and everyone’s contribution is very important. I know that the people of our country will continue the mission of helping to victory“, said Yakilaitis.

100 Lithuanian museums are involved in the project. During the promotion, visitors and residents of Lithuania can donate 5 euros by calling the number 1409, or make a charitable contribution on the website of the National Museum.
The General Director of the National History Museum of Ukraine joined the promotional campaign Fedir Androschuk. He said that the war changed the work of museums and their employees: the museum staff documents the main events of the war and organizes temporary exhibitions representing various aspects of the history of Ukraine. It was also necessary to hide the permanent exhibition and place the exhibits in a safer place.
He emphasized that now the museum cooperates with law enforcement agencies to prevent illegal trade in cultural objects. Rescued artifacts are often transferred to the Museum of the History of Ukraine for preservation, registration and further scientific research.
“Our task is to preserve these museum values for the future. Because of the war, there is an acute shortage of state funds for restoration materials and equipment. And that is why this support initiative is so important for us and in general for the preservation of Ukrainian heritageAndroschuk added.
The initiative “Ukrainian culture has nothing to defend itself” is being organized Lithuanian National Museum, LRT and a refugee aid organization “Strong Together”. The partners of the action are Association of Museums of Lithuania and Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO.
Destroyed and damaged cultural objects
According to the latest data from the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy, more than 1,700 objects of cultural infrastructure were damaged by Russian actions in Ukraine. The greatest number of losses and damages was recorded in Donetsk, Kherson, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Luhansk and Zaporizhia regions.

Since the beginning of Russia’s war against Ukraine, UNESCO has recorded damage to 329 objects in Ukraine: 125 religious structures, 143 houses of historical and artistic significance, 28 museums, 19 monuments, 13 libraries and one archive. According to the 1954 Hague Convention, the deliberate targeting of cultural and religious sites that are not military targets is prohibited by international humanitarian law.
Ukraine was also recently elected to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for the first time. This allows Ukrainian experts to add objects to the List of World Heritage and the List of World Heritage in Danger.
