Ukrainian polar explorers at the “Akademik Vernadskyi” station showed “white nights” in the Antarctic.
It is now late spring and a very long day in the area of the station, reports the National Antarctic Science Center.
On November 22, the sun rose at 03:18 and will set at 22:50. So a daylight day is 19 hours 32 minutes. And its duration is increasing.
“Since our station is located north of the Arctic Circle, the phenomenon of the polar day – the period when the sun does not set below the horizon for more than a day – is not observed here. For comparison: at the South Pole, the duration of the polar day is as much as 184 days.” – polar explorers say.

The longest day on “Vernadskyi” will be December 21 – in the Southern Hemisphere it is the day of the summer solstice.
It will last 22 hours, 24 minutes and 42 seconds (on December 22, it will be only 1 second shorter). And instead of night, for 1.5 hours there will be just twilight.

How do polar explorers react to such conditions?
“Yes, you have to close the windows at night, and celebrate the New Year with lights. But after the Antarctic winter, the sun and bright daytime landscapes definitely improve the mood.
And the long daylight hours add to the work of meteorologists, in particular, when the sky is cloudless. Then, using a special device – the Microtops aerosol solar photometer – scientists measure the concentration of aerosols in the atmosphere every hour.”the researchers say.

Thanks to this, researchers find out how the amount of suspended particles in the atmosphere changes during a day, week, month.
After all, small aerosols play a huge role in shaping the weather and climate. On the basis of such measurements, climate models are then created not only for the polar regions, but also for the entire Earth.

With good weather, summer is also a “hot season” for the ozonometer.
“When the sky is clear, so many ozone measurements have to be done that the scientist hardly leaves the ozone office located in the attic.
And if there are no clouds both at sunset and at sunrise, then the researcher will not have to sleep. Then the ozometrist conducts special Umker measurements, which make it possible to build a vertical profile of ozone distribution in the atmosphere,” – polar explorers say.
