On May 3, an atmospheric optical phenomenon – a solar halo – was observed in the sky over Ukraine. Kharkiv astronomer Volodymyr Kazhanov reports this. A halo is an optical phenomenon that is formed by ice crystals in cirrus clouds at an altitude of 5-10 km in the upper layers of the troposphere. Halos usually appear around the Sun and Moon, and sometimes around other light sources, such as street lights. The light reflected and refracted by the ice crystals often breaks down into a spectrum, which makes the halo look like a rainbow,” adds Volodymyr Kazhanov. You can see the halo in the sky with the naked eye, but the astronomer advises to use sunglasses to protect your eyes from bright sunlight. Also, the astronomer notes that there is a risk of damaging the equipment with solar energy during long-term shooting on a photo or video camera.
