UNESCO included the historic center of Odesa in the List of World Heritage in Danger. With this decision, the organization recognized the outstanding value of the center of Odessa for the whole world and the duty of humanity to protect it.
“Odesa is a free city, a world city, a legendary port that has left its mark in cinema, literature and art, and is thus under the increased protection of the international community. While the war continues, this inclusion reflects our collective determination to ensure that the city that has always overcome global upheavals, will be saved from further destruction,” said Audrey Azoulet, Director-General of UNESCO.
The inclusion of the historic center of Odesa on the List of World Heritage in Danger provides an opportunity to increase the technical and financial international assistance that Ukraine can apply for in order to ensure the protection of the sites and, if necessary, their restoration.
In view of the threats to the city due to the war, the inclusion of the historical center of Odessa in the UNESCO World Heritage List was carried out according to an accelerated procedure, the organization noted.
The Minister of Culture and Information Policy Oleksandr Tkachenko wrote in Telegram that UNESCO’s decision became historic “also because, despite the fierce resistance of the Russians, it is positive. For two days, using many procedural tricks, the country, which violates all international agreements, tried to remove this issue from the discussion agenda, or at least to postpone it. They failed to do this.”
“Both local and central authorities still have a lot of work to do regarding the criteria for compliance with UNESCO standards,” Tkachenko added.
“Diplomatic victory! […] This means that the Ukrainian city of Odesa will be under the protection of UNESCO,” Deputy Foreign Minister Emine Japarova wrote in Twitter.
