Victor Khamatov, the director of the Soviart contemporary art center, has passed away. The loss was reported by his family, according to the Soviart page. The Ukrainian artist’s heart stopped beating at the age of 66. “A man with a rare soul, a devoted family man, a pioneer and a high professional in his work,” colleagues say about Khamatov. In 1987, he founded the first non-state art institution in Ukraine – the Soviart Contemporary Art Center, where large-scale international art exhibitions were organized. In 1995, Viktor Khamatov became the president of the Association of Art Galleries of Ukraine. The gallerist also created the first private museum of modern art and founded the publishing house of the periodical magazine “Gallery”. “For more than 35 years, Viktor Khamatov has conducted major Ukrainian and international art projects with European art institutions, foundations, embassies and gallery activities,” the Soviart Center notes.
