In the director’s new production Ivan Uryvskyi and scenographer Peter Bogomazov based on the play “The Landlord” by Ivan Karpenko-Kary, the surname of one of the heroes was replaced. So the economist Zelensky became Zalusky from the original. The role of the character is played by Serhiy Syplivy and Serhiy Hrynin.

UP Culture turned to the Theater on the Podil for a comment. The theater informed that the director and artistic director will not comment on their decision, because it is their explanation “just add fuel to the fire”.

However, the very next day, November 28, Ivan Uryvskyi commented on the situation. He said that the play was greatly shortened – some characters were combined into one, women played male roles. Therefore, some surnames have been changed, because the authors of the production did not want to speculate on a well-known surname and not to disturb the structure of the play.

The director also added: “Some characters are completely absent, even women play male roles. There are no elements of national costumes. The play is greatly shortened. All characters (especially surnames) of the play and performance are fictitious and do not correspond to reality and are not intended to offend or compromise anyone. And the central character is the sheep, so come and draw your own conclusions!“

Theater connoisseurs and cultural activists reacted to this situation in their own way – tickets for the performance were sold out until January 24.

“The transfer of events to the modern “office” is absolutely natural, the types are still recognizable today, crowdfunding for the monument to Kotlyarevsky in Poltava, and the finale in the hall among us – “no questions?”. A mirror that is not always pleasant to look into. But the theater is not always about the beautiful, is it? Tickets are still available for January. A journalist published a review of the play Valentina Klymenko:

And if the director does not want this detail, this coincidence to drag the meaningful center of the play onto himself, because he wants to talk about something else– the journalist wrote, – To see a hint of Zaluzhny in the change of Zelensky’s surname to Zaluzhny is to suspect everyone in the world of treason. Hostess of the Wild Theater and host of Toronto Television Yaroslav Kravchenko also reacted to the scandal. She wrote that it is not forbidden to criticize anyone from the stage, if it fits the character and the concept. She also added that, in her opinion, Uryvskyi is a smart director who will not add unnecessary contexts.
