Will there be a holiday on March 8, 2024 and will women’s day be canceled in Ukraine

International Women’s Day, which is celebrated on March 8, this year remains a public holiday in Ukraine.

WITHakonoprojekt on canceling the celebration of March 8, which caused a debate last year, the Verkhovna Rada has not yet considered.

However in accordance with the law “On the organization of labor relations under martial law” (martial law was extended until May 13, 2024) this year this day will not be a day off.

At the same time, private companies can make a shortened day or let employees rest.

We will remind, on February 13, 2023, the draft law was registered in the Council No. 9009 on amendments to the “Code of Labor Laws of Ukraine on the Establishment of Ukrainian Holidays”.

People’s deputies wanted to cancel the public holiday on March 8, and instead introduce Ukrainian Women’s Day. The “analog” of Women’s Day was proposed to be celebrated on February 25 – on Lesya Ukrainka’s birthday.

The same draft law proposes to cancel the Soviet holiday May 1 (Labor Day) and Victory Day over Nazism in the Second World War (May 9).

Subsequently on the portal “Diya” created a survey about the fate of March 8 in Ukraine. Almost 62% of Ukrainians voted to leave International Women’s Day as a holiday.

Currently, the draft law No. 9009 is on the agenda and has not yet been voted on.
