The Ministry of Education and Science answered the public organization “Political Action of Women” whether there will be a sex education course in Ukrainian schools. However, Minister Oksen Lisovyi and Director General of the Directorate of Pre-School, School, Out-of-School and Inclusive Education Oleh Yeresko gave different answers. This was reported to “UP. Life” by Iryna Tyshko, who was the co-author of the petition on sex education and sent the relevant request to the Ministry of Education and Culture. Minister Oksen Lisovyi said that the Ministry of Education and Culture is developing draft standards that provide for the introduction of a separate sex education course in school education – that is, sex education may be mandatory. “Currently, the Ministry of Education and Science is developing a project of a state standard for the profile level of general secondary education. Within the framework of the implementation of the social and health-saving educational field of the state standard, the implementation of a separate sex education course is planned, which will take into account the experience of European countries in the implementation of sex education programs”, – answered Lisovyi. What can sex education be like in schools Answer by Oksen Lisovoy At the same time, the Directorate of preschool, school, out-of-school and inclusive education replied that sex education is already in the program. “In Ukraine, sex education is a component of the national education system for children and youth and is carried out in educational institutions in accordance with the Concept of Education of Children and Youth in the National Education System and in accordance with the requirements of educational standards. In particular, the topics of sex education are included in the content of compulsory educational subjects” I explore the world” (grades 1-4), “Basics of health”/”Health, safety and well-being” (grades 5-9), “Biology” (grades 8-11),” answered Oleg Yeresko. Students are also offered optional courses: “I am my health – my life”, “Grow up healthy”, “Respect. Love. Sex”, “Protect yourself from HIV”/”School against AIDS”. Excerpt from the answer of the Director General of the Directorate of Pre-school, School, Out-of-school and Inclusive Education Osvityanin also mentioned the course “Grow up for health” (a joint project of the Ministry of Education and the United Nations Population Fund in Ukraine), the “Respect. Love. Sex” program, which is implemented in public institutions secondary and vocational education of the Dnipropetrovsk region. The Ministry of Education and Culture approved for use in the educational process the trainer’s manual “Reproductive health and responsible behavior of school youth”, “Youth health and its components” – for conducting interactive classes, “7 steps towards” – for working with parents on sexual issues education. “Today, there is some progress in the development of educational programs, courses, informational and methodical materials for both children and youth, as well as for their parents, teachers, and other adults involved in sex education. The forms and methods of education are becoming more interactive, oriented towards needs and interests of target groups,” Yeresko says. The general director added that the implementation of sex education programs requires the training of teachers, the development of modern educational and methodical materials, as well as informational support at the level of communities, mass media, and society. Excerpt from Oleg Yeresk’s answer In “Political Action of Women” the officials’ answers were criticized. “According to the head of the Directorate of Pre-School, School, Out-of-School and Inclusive Education Oleg Yeresko, there is no need to look for a solution… Information about a person and interaction with others is centered around the general structure of the body, hygiene, moral standards, etc., the topic of sexual education and safety is not prescribed in the program. Perhaps teachers can introduce these aspects into the lessons at their own discretion? But they may not,” the activists say. Also, the public alliance noted that the textbook for the subject “Basics of Health”, which Yeresko refers to in his answer, does not contain the necessary information for students, but instead is discriminatory. At the same time, the response of the Minister of Education, Oksen Lisovoy, is considered “more encouraging” by the activists. “This can be the first step towards solving the problem and we are glad to see the political will of the new minister. However, in order to solve the problem, it must first be recognized,” the alliance added. We will remind you that earlier we discussed what sex education can be like at school and how to adapt it to Ukrainian realities. Also, the educational ombudsman told how, in his opinion, sex education should be. And while there is no sex education at school, we advise parents to read the material “No “peppers” and “dumplings”. How parents can talk to their children about sex, love and protection from violence.”
