On the territory of the VDNG Expo Center of the capital, a mosaic panel will be restored, which was destroyed a few days ago in the premises of fire station No. 26 on the territory of the Exhibition Center. This was reported by the director of VDNG Yevhen Mushkin. After the publicity regarding the destruction of the Soviet mosaic with firefighters, the VDNG and the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service in Kyiv held a special meeting at which they decided to restore the mosaic panel in its original form. “During the previous day, we talked with architects, historians, historians, art historians and artists in order to understand what are the possible options for further actions. We held a meeting with the leadership of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Kyiv,” Mushkin wrote. A unique mosaic with firefighters was destroyed at VDNG. Author of the photo: Olena Borisova The head of the Expo Center stated that during the meeting with specialists, they discussed options for solving the problem, advantages and disadvantages of different approaches. “According to the results of this meeting, the management of the Main Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine made a decision to restore the mosaic panel in its original form. For this purpose, the surviving elements of the original panel will be partially used. For our part, we are ready to help the State Emergency Service to find specialists specializing in the restoration of such works,” – Mushkin said. At VDNG, they plan to restore the panel with firefighters. Photo author: Olena Borysova. Also, according to Mushkin, the meeting decided to create a public register of unaccounted-for values located on the territory of the Expo Center. “We want to use our own example to show how to initiate the entry of monuments into the state register. And then this problem can be solved in a similar way everywhere in Ukraine,” said the head of the VDNG. Life turned to architectural researcher, author of the Ukrainian Modernism project Dmytro Solovyov for a comment, who drew attention to the destruction of the mosaic panel at VDNG. He said that he was not invited to the discussion, which is mentioned in the statement of the head of the VDNG. “I don’t know which specialists they turned to. I have many acquaintances from these categories, but no one has written anything about this mosaic,” Solovyov said. According to the researcher, it will be possible to restore the mosaic, because thanks to the activists, some elements of the panel have been preserved. “There must be remnants somewhere. We can find where they were taken. Plus, my friends and I collected some lost elements. This is a tile mosaic. That is, the material is available and quite inexpensive. There are high-quality photos – it will be possible to reproduce it without much difficulty,” said Solovyov . He said that he has a similar example in the restoration of a lost panel in Makarov. “The mosaic was also knocked down there in the 22nd year. And now we are restoring it – me and my restorer colleagues from NAOMA. We are just restoring the tile mosaic. We are working and soon, I think, it will be ready,” said Solovyov. He added that the funds for the restoration of the panels in Makarov are provided at a joint cost. As for the panel on VDNG, it should be restored by the Expo Center and the State Emergency Service. “For the mosaic from Makarov, I made a collection – that is, it’s money from my subscribers, charitable donations. As for the mosaic at VDNH, it should be financed by whoever destroyed it, that is, the State Emergency Service or VDNG, or jointly – who will make the decision,” said Solovyov. Author of the photo: Olena Borysova Dmytro Solovyov emphasized that the destruction of the panel, which apparently happened due to the negligence of the repairers, once again proves that Ukrainian mosaics should receive the appropriate protective status. “I have been raising this matter with the Ministry of Culture for more than a year, and we went to Tkachenko at round tables, and I spoke with the employees of the Department of Cultural Heritage Protection of the Ministry of Culture. I suggested that they list all the works of monumental art of Ukraine, give them a special status, not necessarily a memorial because it is impossible to grant the status of national monuments to all mosaics, but simply the status so that they are legally fixed, and it would not be so easy to destroy them,” said the art researcher. Solovyov also emphasized that the mosaics should be shown in documents, be on the balance sheet of cities or specific institutions. “Now they don’t exist anywhere, they don’t belong to anyone – they exist only in the physical dimension, not legally. Often, when such mosaics are destroyed, no laws are even broken,” Dmytro commented. However, he emphasized that the panels at the National Theater were nevertheless destroyed illegally, since the entire architectural ensemble of the Exhibition Center has a protective status. “There was a very radical violation of the law. And the MKIP should finally deal not only with concerts, but also with heritage. Because somehow Benyxia receives more attention and piety than monumental works created by Ukrainian artists,” said Solovyov. On the territory of the VDNG there was a mosaic that portrayed firefighters. Author of the photo: Olena Borisova The researcher recalled that not so long ago the mosaic “Fish and the Sea” by Volodymyr Patyk in the “Ocean” store was destroyed in Lviv in a similar way. Then the city council of Lviv forced the developer to restore the panel. He also recalled the destruction of the unique composition “Dnieper Waves” by Ernest Kotkov in Dnipro, when the shopping center was being expanded there. “In general, thousands of objects have been destroyed in recent years, and if we take into account not only mosaics, but also bas-reliefs, stained glass windows, then, I think, even more,” Dmytro Solovyov said.
