Petro Buryak worked as a truck driver abroad for 16 years, had no combat experience and did not serve in the army. However, from the first days of the full-scale war, he returned to Ukraine and joined the Military Commissariat. So he got into the 24th separate mechanized brigade named after King Danylo. The man was a driver and performed tasks together with a group of sappers. One day his life was divided into “before” and “after”. While performing a task in the Kherson region, the defender blew up a mine. As a result, he lost his legs and received serious injuries. Petro Buryak told “Ukrainian Pravda. He graduated from vocational school No. 53 in Lviv, where he studied to become an auto mechanic. Before the war, the man worked as a truck driver, traveled to 62 countries of the world and could not even imagine that he would end up in the army: “I had a normal life: work, home, work. I went on flights for 3-4 months, and then returned for a month home. I could not think that I would one day serve in the army.” Life before and during the service of Peter News of a full-scale invasion caught him while working in Spain. That night he was listening to Ukrainian radio and learned about the terrible news. Already at 6 in the morning, Petro called the manager and said that he was writing a resignation letter, packing his things and returning to Ukraine. Once at home, the man went to the Military Commissariat in Yavorov. “Then I was assigned to the 80th Airborne Assault Brigade. At first I was left under the guard of the Military Commissariat for almost 2 weeks. Then I was transferred to the 24th Brigade, I was a sapper driver, but I said that I would learn and carry out tasks together with the boys.” – says Petro Buryak. Injury and rehabilitation Together with his comrades, Petro Buryak performed tasks near Bakhmut, Popasny, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhia. He was wounded in the Kherson region. The fighter does not remember the two days before the explosion and the very moment of the tragedy. He was in an artificial coma for three weeks, and found himself on the verge of life and death 5 times. Petro Buryak regained consciousness in the hospital in Odesa: “The guys told me about those two days that I don’t remember: we were in the Kherson region, and we were bombed around the clock. After what happened, the guys told me that I was conscious, talking with them all the time. Every three minutes I asked if my boys, with whom I was in the group, were alive and what was wrong with the car,” says Petro Buryak. Peter’s rehabilitation Later, Peter was sent to Lviv, where he was operated on again, then the fighter underwent rehabilitation and prosthetics at the Superhumans Center. The warrior is convinced that you should not be lazy, but work on yourself: “Little by little, I developed myself, worked on myself, went to the gym, at first I waved my legs here and there, performed light exercises. The main thing is to prioritize what you want for yourself. He remembers how his daughter used to come to him in the hospital: “Mala came to visit, took the pant (trousers – ed.) and felt it. She says, “Dad, when your legs are done, will you be like a robot?” He answered in the affirmative. And she to me: “don’t worry, we’ll still run.” Now Peter continues to work on himself. The house has been completely remodeled for him so that it would be convenient for him to move around in a wheelchair. On the street or elsewhere, the man moves with prostheses. Among the inconveniences he faces, he names the stairs, because they are high for free movement, there is also a problem with the ramps, which are not adapted for their normal use. New vocation and support of the ZSU Despite the fact that Peter cannot return to his brothers, he wants to continue helping to win the victory. Now he has created a charity the “Indomitable Warriors” fund, where together with his wife and children, he collects funds for defenders for cars, ammunition and other needs. “The boys need help. I myself know what a car at the front is like. If we didn’t have a second car at the time of the explosion, I wouldn’t have been saved. A car at the front is life,” says Petro Buryak. Currently, Petro has handed over 7 cars to the front and continues to cooperate with the military to provide them with everything they need: “I can no longer do what I did with the boys, but I can otherwise help and it will save someone’s life. The main thing is to help each other, the unity of the whole nation should be. Now there are two options: you are either in the Armed Forces or for the Armed Forces.” Petro advises military personnel who have been injured or have survived an amputation not to give up, to work on themselves, to live for their family and brothers, and now there is an opportunity to help them win.
