15 operations and cardiac arrest: a girl from Donetsk region spent 10 years in the hospital due to a congenital pathology

A kidney transplant saved the life of Vlada, a teenage girl from the Donetsk region. Due to a severe congenital pathology of the bladder, the girl was in the hospital for 10 years.

The girl’s congenital pathology was diagnosed in early childhood, when it led to kidney problems, the Ministry of Health reports.

In 2013, Vlada’s condition rapidly deteriorated, so she began to undergo hemodialysis.

After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2014, the mother moved her daughter to Kharkiv, where the girl was treated for two years in one of the local hospitals. Later, she was sent to Kyiv – to the National Children’s Specialized Hospital “Okhmatdyt”, where Vlada spent almost 8 more years.

The treatment process was complicated. The authorities had to go through all kinds of kidney replacement therapy and the formation of vascular accesses. She underwent 15 operations, cardiac arrest, pulmonary edema, the girl was repeatedly resuscitated.

“I couldn’t drink more than 100 milliliters of water a day because my kidneys weren’t working. Hemodialysis was performed three times a week, each procedure lasted 4-6 hours. I couldn’t even imagine what it was like to live outside the hospital and without hemodialysis.” – says the girl.

The only salvation for her was a transplant. This spring, Vlada’s condition was so difficult that Okhmatdyt’s medical council determined for her the first emergency status.

“This meant that the Unified State Information System for Transplantation (YEDIST) had to give her priority when determining the “donor-recipient” pair, – the Ministry of Health explains.

At the end of April, the system found a related donor for Vlada – he was a patient from Volyn. Doctors declared him brain dead, and his relatives consented to organ harvesting.

The kidney transplant was successful. Thanks to her, after 10 years of treatment, Vlada finally left the hospital.

“The process of her rehabilitation is still ongoing, but the girl is already experiencing positive changes. She is no longer tied to dialysis and can freely plan her time: walking with her mother and exploring various sights of the capital”the ministry says.

It will be recalled that in Lviv, doctors saved four patients by transplanting their organs from one posthumous donor.
