In the north of Taiwan, the “Elephant Trunk Rock”, popular among tourists, collapsed. It has long been under threat of erosion.

This is reported by CNN with reference to local authorities.

Shen Chuan-chou, a professor at the Department of Earth Sciences at the National Taiwan University, called the collapse of the rock “natural” because it was constantly affected by sea water and wind. The shape of the rock in the form of a relatively thin arch also made it unreliable.

“Elephant Trunk Rock” is located on a narrow strip of land about 10 kilometers from the popular tourist area of Jiufen, northeast of Taipei.

This is not the only natural object along the rocky northern coast of Taiwan whose fate worries geologists.

The “Queen’s Head” rock (named for its resemblance to a bust of Queen Elizabeth “with a long thin neck”) in Yeliu Geological Park is also in danger of collapsing.

According to the official Central News Agency of Taiwan, the circumference of the queen’s head already reaches 120 centimeters and is getting smaller every year.

A similar situation existed on the Maltese island of Gozo. Its famous limestone “Azure Window”, made famous by the TV series “Game of Thrones”, fell into the sea in 2017. Two years later, Malta announced plans to build a spectacular steel arch on the site, but the project has still not materialized.
