Polar scientists from the “Akademik Vernadskyi” station showed 19 chicks of the South Polar Skua, which hatched on Galindez Island.
This season, as many as 19 of them were born to 13 local couples, the National Antarctic Science Center reports.
“This is a rather important indicator, because last year, Ukrainian biologists did not record the appearance of young plovers at Galindez, although there were egg clutches. Breeding of these birds on the surrounding islands was not very successful“, – they say in the center.
Now, according to the observations of scientists, there are chicks on all the islands that have been surveyed.
According to biologists, such annual monitoring of the breeding success of Antarctic inhabitants enables scientists to track the impact of climate change on their lives.
We will remind you that we previously wrote that at the end of January, polar explorers from the “Akademik Vernadskyi” station, during the survey of the neighboring islands of Skua, Black and Shelter, discovered cubs of South Polar skua. In general, polar explorers counted about two dozen nests of these birds on the islands. Most of them already had two babies each.
