Roman Kulik is a captain of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, who was mobilized in the first days of the war. He served at the Yavoriv training ground in the Lviv region, where on March 13, 2022, the Russians fired more than 30 cruise missiles. The soldier received life-threatening injuries, but the doctors managed to save his life, the Nezlamni rehabilitation center said. “God saved me with the hands of doctors who pulled me out of the other world,” says 46-year-old Roman. After 20 days in the intensive care unit, Roman spent another 50 days in the surgical department. In total, he underwent 13 operations, during which it was possible to get 12 out of 22 fragments. “At that time, this was our most traumatized hero. The patient who was in the most critical condition out of the hundred wounded who came to us that day. We have already repeatedly given reports at various international congresses of war trauma surgeons. Because this is a truly unique case when it was possible to save the life of a person with such severe, critical injuries,” says the head of the surgical department of the Nezlamni center, Hnat Gerych. Doctors note that, in addition to medical care, recovery is greatly influenced by the patient’s desire to live and the support of relatives. His wife Natalia was always by Roman’s side. Some reconstructive operations were performed for the first time in Ukraine specifically to restore Roman’s health and mobility. The man had a strong zest for life: he worked with rehabilitators every day. “I understood that if it wasn’t difficult, I had to move. Every day is an exercise, rehabilitation and an incentive to live. I really wanted to live,” says the soldier. Due to the injuries he received, he was released from service, but the man helps his brothers and covers the needs of the unit. He emphasizes that the most important thing is not to lose heart.
