The Ministry of Education and Culture announced preparations for the piloting of the reform of specialized secondary education. For this, 25 schools from all over Ukraine were chosen, which will be the first to develop new educational models and recommendations for the implementation of the reform.

In the future, these schools will become “mentors” for pilot academic lyceums that will test specialized secondary education from 2025.

Reform of specialized secondary education starts in Ukraine from 2027. High school students will be able to choose a study profile, courses and subjects.

The MES added that academic lyceums will change the approach to career guidance work to a more qualitative one, as well as study the requests and needs of students regarding courses.

“An important goal of the reform of specialized secondary education is to change the culture of interaction in the educational environment so that free-thinking people who are able to offer new solutions for local and global challenges can grow there.” – noted Minister of Education Oksen Lisovyi.

In addition, male and female students will be able to independently “make up” their educational path. There are several possibilities for this:

• two levels of study of each educational field: basic (basic) and advanced (profile);
• the educational program of the lyceum will include both “narrow” academic subjects and integrated courses;
• the content of education in the lyceum will be flexible, varied and will consist of three components: mandatory for all educational components; variable part within the selected profile; variable – outside the profile;
• from the 10th to the 12th grade, the number of hours for studying mandatory educational components will decrease, but the number of hours for studying the variable part will increase.

“Currently, the planning horizon of the reform is 10 years, that is, the Strategy covers the period until 2033. But in the conditions of a full-scale war, it is difficult to predict what the situation will be in Ukrainian education and the country as a whole in 2027 or 2030,” DECIDE project manager Valentyna Poltorak emphasized.

The MES also identified three clusters by which lyceums will be able to form profiles, in particular: STEM, linguistic and literary, social and humanitarian.

“Each lyceum will offer a choice of at least three profiles within one, two or three clusters. In fixed classes, students will study only compulsory subjects/courses. To study the elective cycle (profile and non-profile), schools will form interclass groups.” – added the MES.
