The government has approved the procedure for using 515 million hryvnias provided in the state budget for 2024 for the construction and operation of the National Military Memorial Cemetery.
According to the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal, the arrangement of the cemetery is one of the main tasks for the Ministry of Veterans Affairs for this year.
“The National Military Memorial Cemetery will become a central place where everyone can pay their respects to the fallen heroes of our Motherland. It will be a special place where sorrow, pride, pain, respect, boundless gratitude and eternal memory intersectShmyhal added.
It will be recalled that battles were fought over the location of the military cemetery from the very beginning.
In 2022, the KMDA was tasked with developing a site plan for the location of the National Military Memorial Cemetery in the Lysa Gora tract, but activists and the government opposed it.
They decided to create a memorial cemetery for fallen soldiers in Bykivna, where the National Historical and Memorial Reserve “Bykivnia Graves” is already located. But President Volodymyr Zelenskyi never signed the corresponding law.
In August 2023, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the implementation of an experimental project on the construction of the National Military Memorial Cemetery. It envisages the creation of a cemetery in the village of Gatne, which borders Kyiv.
However, relatives of the fallen heroes are against such a decision. They insist on another location of the National Military Cemetery – in Bykivna.
At the beginning of December 2023, the parliament supported the draft law on the construction and operation of the National Military Memorial Cemetery, which provides that the location of the cemetery will be determined by the Cabinet of Ministers.
