In the American state of Virginia, a draft law is being considered, according to which librarians will be held criminally liable if they issue to minors “obscene”, in the opinion of the state, books.
This can lead to baseless accusations against librarians, ABC News reports.
Violators can be charged with a felony and fined up to $25,000. Also, if the library employee is found guilty, he will face up to 5 years in prison.
The American Library Association found that, according to the document, books dealing with LGBTQ+, gender, politics and race would mostly fall under the category of “obscene material”.
Such materials are now being tried en masse to be banned in state libraries. According to the association, in the first eight months of 2023, attempts to censor material in libraries increased by 20% compared to 2022.
On February 16, the bill passed the House of Delegates and is currently under consideration by the Senate.
