Ukrainian writer, volunteer and singer Serhiy Zhadan published a photo next to the plaque of the National Music Academy of Ukraine, which still bears the name of the Russian composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky.

For more than a year, the writer has been conducting a kind of campaign for the decolonization of Ukrainian cities, taking pictures against the background of Pushkin monuments in various cities of Ukraine. Usually, soon the local authorities dismantle the monuments to the Russian poet.

However, the reaction to the photo with Pushkin from Kyiv was delayed – the monument was dismantled only now, and Zhadan took a photo with him on May 3: The government stripped the pedestal of its protective status.

As for the music academy, the struggle to rename the institution has been going on for over a year. The management of the conservatory is headed by the rector Maxim Tymoshenko defends Tchaikovsky in the title despite student protests and the dismissal of a large number of the institution’s leading teachers in protest.
Perhaps in this way, Zhadan is trying to draw attention to the situation in the institution – re-election of the rector is expected there on November 24. According to UP. CultureMaxim Tymoshenko is still the only candidate for the post of rector of the Tchaikovsky National Academy of Music.
