From January 1, content in Ukrainian on TV and radio should occupy 90% of airtime – language ombudsman

From January 1, 2024, quotas for the use of the Ukrainian language for television and radio broadcasting have increased.

From now on, state broadcasting should fill at least 90% of the air, said Taras Kremin, Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language.

From January 1, separate provisions of Article 40 of the Law of Ukraine “On Media” entered into force, which provide for an increase in the volume of programs in the state language on television and radio.

The minimum share of Ukrainian-language programs in audiovisual media:

  • national and regional – increases from 75% to 90%;
  • local – from 60% to 80%.

The share of the Ukrainian language in programs and films that will be broadcast from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., as well as from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the total weekly volume should be:

  • in national and regional mass media – at least 90%;
  • in local ones – at least 80%.

On the radio, content in Ukrainian should occupy at least 90% of the broadcast. In particular, this applies to news and analytical blocks and entertainment programs.

“Such innovations are an important step in the protection of the Ukrainian-language information space and the rights of citizens to receive information in the state language. According to our calculations, the share of programs in the state language on the airwaves of TV channels and radio stations, in particular those that broadcast at the local level, will increase significantly.” – said the language ombudsman.

It will be recalled that earlier Taras Kremin appealed to the national broadcasters with a request to stop using bilingualism on the air.
