“Rehearsal of Swan Lake”: a Russian woman with the participation of a Ukrainian woman will represent Austria at the Venice Biennale

Austria will be represented at the 60th Venice Biennale by a Russian artist Anna Yermolaeva with the exhibition project “Rehearsal of Swan Lake“.

“It is very good and important that Austria is strongly represented at the Biennale and makes a decisive contribution to this international exhibition of contemporary art. That is why I am glad that the Austrian contribution in 2024 will occupy a particularly relevant and relevant position“, said the State Secretary for Art and Culture of Austria Andrea Mayer.

Anna Yermolaeva was born in Leningrad and moved to Austria in 1989. According to the artist, the exhibition refers to her childhood memories of Soviet censorship: during political or social unrest, Soviet television broadcast Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake ballet. The broadcast could not stop for several days in a row.

“Swan Lake Rehearsal” is supposed to transform the instrument”sabotage and censorship” on the possibility of a change in the political regime. The presentation in the pavilion will include video, installations, light objects, sound and performative elements, combining them with new works and the continuation of Yermolayeva’s existing works.

A Ukrainian ballerina and choreographer participated in the preparation for the exhibition Oksana Sergeeva. She used to run a ballet school in Cherkasy, but after the full-scale invasion began in 2022, she moved to Austria.

“Anna Yermolaeva’s exhibition “Swan Lake” in the Austrian Pavilion organically fits into the overall theme of the Biennale Arte 2024 “Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners everywhere”, chosen by Adriano Pedrosa, which focuses on the theme of foreignness, migration, questions of national identity and cultural diversity, with an emphasis on artists, who survived flight and migration” – added the curator of the Austrian pavilion Gabriele Spindler.

The Austrian Pavilion of the 60th Venice Biennale will open on April 18, 2024.

About the Venice Biennale in 2024

The Venice Biennale is one of the largest art events in the world. This year he became its curator and manager Adriano Pedrosa.

The main topic of 2024 was chosen as the problem of artists’ migration under the title “Foreigners everywhere”. Pedrosa promised that the biennale would focus on immigrant artists, emigrants, diasporas, exiles and refugees. Attention will also be drawn to the idea in a broader sense.

The curators of the national pavilion of the Biennale-2024 were Maksym Horbatskyi and Victoria Bavykina (Ukrainian Photography NGO) and their project “Netting“.

“Weaving nets” is a metaphor for joint action, which simultaneously allows and helps the emancipation of each of its participants. The three works of art collected in the project will show different common experiences, ways of experiencing these experiences and possibilities of their communication.

Due to a series of changes, Poland will also be represented together with Ukrainians at the Biennale in 2024. As reported by Suspilne Kultura, the artistic association “Open group“(Anton Varga, Yuriy Biley and Pavlo Kovacs Jr.) and a Polish curator Marta Chizh will demonstrate the project “Repeat after me“.

It will be a continuation of the existing installation, which was created by the artists in 2022 and dedicated to Ukrainian refugees from the East of Ukraine. This work can be seen in Lviv until March 10, 2024 at Jam Factory Art Center.

Project “Polish exercises about the tragedy of the world. Between Germany and Russia” an artist Ignatius Tshechos and curators Piotr Bernatovych and Dariush Karlovich primarily had to represent Poland. However, it was withdrawn due to the change of government in the country and criticism of the project in the artistic environment.

Russia has not participated in the Venice Biennale since the full-scale invasion of the territory of Ukraine.
