A boy with diabetes, who was kidnapped by the occupiers, was returned from Crimea

During the occupation of Kherson, Denys Berezhny was forcibly taken to a camp in Crimea. The boy suffers from diabetes, and his parents are hearing impaired and cannot speak, so they could not resist the armed Russians.

The boy stayed in the occupation for 10 months, but he still managed to return home.

His story was told in the charity organization Save Ukraine, which helps return illegally deported Ukrainians home.

Denis, who was 17 years old at the time, was taken by the Russians on a school bus to the Kherson river port, and from there to the “Druzhba” sanatorium in Yevpatoria. The occupiers promised him that he would stay there for only two weeks – supposedly for a “rest”, after which he would return home. However, three weeks later, the checkpoints on the border with Crimea were closed.

The former Ukrainian Berkutov Valery Astakhov, who escaped in 2014, was responsible for security in this camp.

From the first days, he tried to “break” all Ukrainian children, exerted psychological pressure on them to force them to side with Russia, and forbade them to mention Ukraine. Every day at 8 in the morning, the anthem of the occupying country was played for the children“, the organization says.

If children were seen with symbols of Ukraine on things or clothes, the things were burned, and the “naughtiest” were put in isolation.

Denis has diabetes, so he constantly needs insulin.

However, as the organization notes, when he reported his illness and need for treatment at the camp’s medical center, it turned out to be a problem. Due to the lack of proper treatment, Denis’s hands and feet began to go numb.

In December 2022, all the children from “Druzhba” were moved to another camp – “Luchystiy”. According to the distribution of the occupying “power”, Denys entered the maritime technical school in Kerch. The guy remembers how he was very nervous in an unfamiliar place: his blood pressure “jumped” above 150. In addition, the guy was forced to sign a bunch of new documents – about a dormitory, food, and a scholarship.

As a result, he studied at the technical school until the end of the academic year, but he really wanted to return home and study “where he likes, not where he is forced.” The Russians constantly demanded that he get a Russian passport.

Then Berezhny found out about the charity organization Save Ukraine, and he called there from a Russian number and gave all the information about himself. Volunteers contacted him. In order to pick up the boy, a power of attorney was drawn up for his friend’s mother, because his parents would not be able to do it on their own due to hearing impairment.

After ten months of occupation, he was finally able to return home.

“At the Russian border, FSB officers caught up with the boy and interrogated him for a long time. They checked his phone. At the border with Ukraine, taking a heavy bag in his hands, Denys shouted: “Glory to Ukraine“, the information says.

We will remind you that the Russian invaders continue to kidnap Ukrainian children under the pretext of recovery, in particular, they took 50 children from the temporarily occupied Luhansk region to Dagestan.

The Russians also change the personal data of children kidnapped from Ukraine, which complicates their search. In particular, cases were recorded when they added age to children who were taken to “re-education camps” in Crimea.
