Radio Svoboda is starting a podcast project with Alexander Filippenko

Radio Liberty is launching a new podcast project dedicated to Russian dissident writers of the 20th century. It is called “Writer’s Freedom”. Every month we will introduce listeners to the works of writers and publicists who had a great impact on the development of not only Russian literature, but also the self-awareness of society. They will be read by People’s Artist of Russia Alexander Filippenko.

During the 70 years of its history, Radio Liberty has introduced listeners to the work of writers, poets and essayists who, due to ideological prohibitions, were not published on the family. Some of them became victims of repression, others were forced abroad. However, even before the “authorization” of the family, the books and articles of Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Georgy Vladimirov, Vladimir Voynovich, Vladimir Bukovsky, Andrei Sakharov, Andrei Amalryk, and others became a phenomenon of Russian literature and bright civil statements, and later became classics of Russian literature.

During the Iron Curtain, Radio Liberty helped persecuted writers and publicists and came to the homes of Soviet listeners. Now, when repressions against freedom of speech are intensifying in Russia again, their voice is especially important. We selected the best pages of the classics and invited Alexander Filippenko, who is widely known not only as a film and theater artist, but also as a creator of audiobooks and audio performances, to voice them.

“Writer’s Freedom” podcasts will be released monthly. The first broadcast – “Night Roads” by Hayto Gazdanov – will take place on Sunday, January 28, at noon Moscow time.

The project will be available on the Radio Liberty podcast service page.
