A 17-year-old Ukrainian refugee learned the Norwegian language in record time

17-year-old Ukrainian Mykhailo Lakatosh learned the Norwegian language in record time. In half a year, he managed to pass a test that people usually spend two years on, reports Nrk. The boy fled the war and came to Norway from Ukraine in May 2022. Mykhailo went to a local high school and communicated with his classmates and teachers in English. However, after the summer holidays he started speaking Norwegian and then passed an exam that included listening, reading, speaking, communication and writing. Mykhailo with the teacher Mykhailo’s teacher says that this is the best level of knowledge she has seen. Ukrainians were helped to learn Norwegian not only by additional lessons with teachers, but also by communication with classmates. The boy was greatly helped by his friend Jonas, with whom he sat at the same desk. Communicating with Mykhailo, Jonas was also able to learn a little Ukrainian. “It was difficult, but when you communicate so much with Norwegians and you are part of Norwegian society, it happens a little automatically,” says Mykhailo Lakatosh. According to Olaf Husby, associate professor of language and literature at the University of Norway, Norwegian is a difficult language to learn, and the best way to learn it is to speak the language every day with others.
