A child died in a New York kindergarten due to opioids: the police are looking for the owner’s husband
In New York, the police are looking for the husband of the owner of a kindergarten in which a one-year-old child died of a drug overdose, and three more were hospitalized. Before calling the police, the owner of the establishment called the man twice, reports The Independent. After the tragic incident, law enforcement officers arrested the owner of the kindergarten, 36-year-old Gray Mendez, and the 41-year-old tenant of the premises, Carlisto Acevedo Brito. In the children’s room, where the children were poisoned, the police found one kilogram of fentanyl, which was hidden “under the rug on which the children used to sleep.” Photo: CBS Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid that is 50 times stronger than heroin. According to the police, the drugs seized from the kindergarten can kill up to 500,000 people. The owner of the establishment claims that she did not know about the presence of drugs in the children’s room. When the woman saw the condition of the children, she called her husband twice before calling 911, police said. Mendez’s husband is reportedly a cousin of the tenant. He came to the kindergarten several times and took several bags from there. Currently, Mendes’ husband has been recognized as an accomplice in a criminal case, and the police are looking for him. “The defendants poisoned four infants and killed one of them because they were running a drug operation at the daycare,” said Manhattan District Attorney Damien Williams, adding that the daycare should keep children safe and not “surrounded by drugs.” According to Mendes’ lawyer, her client denies all the accusations. “Her only crime was that she rented her room to someone who had a kilogram of drugs. There is no evidence that she did anything other than take proper care of these children,” said lawyer Andres Aranda. Currently, the owner of the establishment and the tenant are in custody without bail. Each of them faces life imprisonment.
