A child rapist who was in hiding for 27 years was arrested in Britain

In Britain, one of the most wanted criminals was arrested, who hid from the court for 27 years for sexual violence against children.

An 80-year-old man named Richard Burroughs was detained at London’s Heathrow Airport after being returned from Thailand, Cheshire Police said.

Burroughs sexually abused children at a children’s home in Congleton and the West Midlands between 1969 and 1971, according to inquests.

Now the fugitive will be tried on charges of corruption and sexual violence, writes The Guardian.

“Our determination to find Burroughs has not wavered over the past 27 years, and his arrest marks a significant step forward in this case…

I also hope his arrest serves as a warning to other wanted suspects. No matter how long you hide, we will find you and you will be arrested”said Police Inspector Eleanor Atkinson.

The full name of the 80-year-old fugitive is Richard John Ramsey Burroughs. Cheshire Police had been trying to trace him since December 1997 when he failed to appear in court.

Then the man was declared wanted. Law enforcement officers also turned to the BBC’s Crimewatch program to inform citizens about Burroughs. But he remained unnoticed for almost 3 decades.

But this year, Burroughs was caught in Thailand – local law enforcement officers are constantly looking for criminals fleeing from Britain.

“Using our international network and working closely with our colleagues at Cheshire Police, we were able to track down a fugitive wanted on extremely serious charges.” said Duncan Burrage, communications officer for the National Crime Agency in Thailand.

Richard Burroughs is currently in custody. He is due to appear in the Royal Court soon.

“I would like to thank the public for the information they have provided over the years in our search for Burroughs. And I hope his arrest will bring some relief.”– added police officer Eleanor Atkinson.
