A criminal case has been initiated against the creator of “Masyana” Kuvaev

In relation to the author of the cartoons about Masyan, the St. Petersburg animator Oleg Kuvaev, who is against the war in Ukraine, a criminal case was opened for public actions directed against the security of the state. Mash and “Fontanka” write about this with reference to sources.

The reason for the criminal case, as it is claimed, was the episode “Masyana”, in which the heroine of the cartoon calls on Russian soldiers to surrender to the APU. The cartoonist faces up to 6 years in prison.

Kuvaev himself told Sever.Realia that he does not know anything about the criminal case against him. No one from the Russian law enforcement agencies contacted him, he did not see any official information about the initiation of the case. As “Fontanka” writes, he has not yet been declared wanted. Kuvaev left Russia a long time ago.

After the start of the full-scale military invasion of Ukraine, he released several anti-war episodes of “Masyana” with sharp criticism of the actions of Russian troops and President Vladimir Putin.

One of the anti-war episodes was called “Saint Mariuburg”. In it, Chinese troops bombed Russian cities, including St. Petersburg, to “cleanse Russia of fascists.” The name refers to the Ukrainian Mariupol, which was heavily destroyed during the Russian invasion, and later became a sister city of St. Petersburg. The Russian authorities mentioned the need for “denazification and demilitarization” of Ukraine among the goals of a military invasion of a neighboring country.
