In Volodymyr, Volyn, a customs seal of the “Dorogychyn type” of the Kyivan Rus period, made at the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries, was found. The artifact was discovered during excavations of the “Apostolshchyna” tract as part of the project to build a shelter and educational building of the Oleksandr Tsinkalovsky Lyceum, archeologist Viktor Bayuk said. According to Oleksandr Alfiorov’s conclusion, the front side of the seal has an iconographic image of St. John the Baptist, and the reverse side has a flourishing cross. “Unfortunately, the attribution of the seal to a specific ruler has not been carried out at the moment, but this case has gained a new impetus. The thing is miniature, with a diameter of only 13×10 mm. Hanging seals of this type have similar iconography, but are much larger and more massive,” says the archaeologist. PHOTO Photo: Viktor Chukhrai Researches are carried out on the order of the Lyceum named after Oleksandr Tsinkalovskyi of the Volodymyr City Council on the basis of the Qualification Document and the Permit of the Ministry of Culture. The work is being carried out by the Archaeological Protection Service of Ukraine of the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine together with the Volyn National University named after Lesia Ukrainka, the “Ancient Volodymyr” reserve and the Union of Archaeologists of Ukraine. According to Victor Bayuk, these are the most extensive archaeological studies of Prince Volodymyr in history.
