A doctor who demanded $6,000 for medical assistance will be tried in Kyiv

An official of the Institute of Urology will be tried in Kyiv, who was found to have accepted a bribe of $6,000 for a free operation. The man faces up to 10 years in prison.

The pre-trial investigation was completed and the indictment was sent to the court.

450,000 hryvnias and 43,600 dollars were seized during searches of the place of work and residence. They also seized three apartments, a residential building, a plot of land in Kyiv, and the suspect’s car, the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office reports.

The head of the department of one of the capital’s clinics demanded 6,000 dollars from the patient’s relatives for the operation and post-operative care.

According to the investigator of the Shevchenkiv police department Alytyna Mironova, the doctor even threatened the daughter of one of the patients that he would deprive her father of qualified medical care.

“After the surgical intervention, the doctor began to demand from the patient’s relative to give him 6,000 USD for the provided medical care and further provision of proper post-operative treatment.” – she adds.

Investigators exposed the doctor when he illegally received money in his office.

He will be tried under Part 3 of Art. 368 – acceptance of an offer, promise or receipt of an illegal benefit by an official of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the National Police reports.

The doctor faces imprisonment for a period of five to ten years and deprivation of the right to hold certain positions or engage in certain activities for a period of up to three years, with confiscation of property.
