Medieval ornament with the inscription “Love Conquers All”

Polish archaeologists discovered a medieval tin ornament in the shape of a dove with the Latin inscription: “AMOR VINCIT OMNIA”, which translates as “Love Conquers All”.

The National Maritime Museum in Gdańsk reported the find, writes Arkeonews.

The ornament has the remains of two separate handles, which were probably used to hang it on a chain or attach it to clothing.

For the ancient Greeks and Romans, the dove symbolized love, devotion and care. The dove was the sacred bird of the love goddesses Aphrodite and Venus.

“When you think of birds and love, a pair of pigeons is the most likely image that comes to mind. Their loyalty and care for their partner make them the perfect symbol of love and family“, says Dr. Anna Rembish-Lyubievska, archaeologist of the museum.

The museum said that similar ornaments were popular in Gdańsk between the 14th and 15th centuries, and that this fashion came from Western Europe, particularly from the Netherlands and England.

The artifact was found during archaeological work on a port crane of the 15th century, wedged between two defense towers.

It was once the world’s largest working crane, but it also served as a defensive structure and one of the city’s gates. It had a carrying capacity of 4 tons and was 11 meters high.

As of 2020, restoration work is underway to restore the harbor crane, which was heavily damaged during World War II.

Repair and modernization of the crane is planned to be completed on April 30, 2024.

We will remind, in Poland, archaeologists unearthed a collection of more than 550 artifacts of the Bronze Age. Among the finds, in particular, were women’s necklaces and bracelets.
