Rangers photographed a rare northern marsupial mole in the hottest region of Australia – the Great Sandy Desert.

It is reported BBC and ABS News.

The find was discovered by a group of local rangers monitoring the territories. According to them, it is not easy to find a marsupial mole. The search process involves finding their tiny footprints that are hard to spot in the sand.

The animal was initially mistaken for a baby guinea pig, wildlife expert Gareth Catt said. He claims that, despite the common prejudice about poor fauna in deserts, this area is full of unique creatures.

The elusive marsupial mole

Northern marsupial moles are found only in the central desert regions of Australia.

Marsupial moles usually come into human observation only a few times a decade. Due to the remoteness of the region where the animals live and their tendency to hide underground, local authorities do not know the true size of the population.

The palm-sized northern marsupial mole, or kakarratul, has silky golden fur and underdeveloped eyes. By data encyclopedia Britannica, these animals have an interesting life cycle: one period they are intensely active, and the next they suddenly fall asleep.

Moles of this species hunt directly under the surface of the soil – there they look for larvae and earthworms. Unlike ordinary moles, kakarratul does not leave behind tunnels.
