A potentially dangerous asteroid 2023 SP1 is flying towards the Earth, which will come as close as possible to our planet on February 7, 2024.

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory of NASA informs about this.

On February 7, 2024 at 00:06 UTC, the asteroid will fly past Earth at a distance of nearly 5.5 million kilometers, which is an average of 14 times the distance to the Moon.

According to NASA, its length is 244 meters, and its diameter is 190-430 meters.

The asteroid will fly at a speed of more than 42 thousand kilometers per hour. It will be possible to observe it online on the page of the project “Virtual Telescope” (The Virtual Telescope Project 2.0). You must join the broadcast on February 7.

2023 SP1 was discovered on September 17, 2023 by the Pan-STARRS Panoramic Survey Telescope System, whose mission is to detect objects around Earth that the planet is likely to collide with.

An asteroid is considered “potentially dangerous” if its distance from Earth is less than 7.4 million kilometers and its size exceeds 150 meters. This asteroid falls under both of these parameters.

We previously reported that scientists have created an animation showing the rapid approach of an asteroid to Earth in 2029.
