A rare 1500-year-old gold ring

A rare 1,500-year-old Merovingian ring made of 22-carat gold was found in Denmark with the help of a metal detector.

Archaeologists believe that the ring can shed light on a previously unknown family of royal figures associated with powerful European dynasties of the early Middle Ages, writes Arkeonews with reference to the National Museum of Denmark.

The ring dates back to 500-600 AD and is encrusted with red semi-precious stones, which symbolized power among the Germanic peoples.

The golden ring probably testifies to the presence in this area of ​​a previously unknown princely family closely related to the Merovingians, the royal family that ruled the Frankish Empire.

For the Germanic peoples, the Almandine pomegranate was a symbol of power.

“The golden ring not only reveals information about a possible new princely family in Emmerlev, but also links the area to one of the largest centers of power in Iron Age Europe. The gold ring probably belonged to a woman, specifically the prince’s daughter, who was also married to the prince“, says Kirstin Pommergaard, who is the curator of the National Museum of Denmark.

Archaeologists see a connection with the royal family in the design of the ring with very well-executed spirals on the lower side and three-lobed pins in the transition between the ring rail and the “nest” with the stone, which is characteristic of Frankish craftsmanship.

“This is an impressive level of craftsmanship that is hard to replicate today”, says Kirstin Pommergaard.

Archaeologists do not believe that the ring was simply lost during a trading trip, as other items were found in the same area, including two gold coins, seven silver coins and Frisian polished pottery.

The researchers hope that further study of the ring and the surrounding area where it was found will shed light on the once semi-autonomous political systems along the North Sea.

We will remind you that Polish archaeologists discovered a medieval tin ornament in the shape of a dove with the Latin inscription: “AMOR VINCIT OMNIA”, which in translation means “Love conquers all”.

Archaeologists also unearthed a collection of over 550 Bronze Age artifacts in Poland. Among the finds, in particular, were women’s necklaces and bracelets.
