In Ukraine, during the week from February 12 to 18, 6 people, including children, died due to complications from the flu.

This was announced by Deputy Minister of Health and Chief State Sanitary Doctor Ihor Kuzin on February 22 on the telethon “Yedini Novyni”.

According to him, the increase in the number of patients with influenza has been recorded since the beginning of January. In addition, influenza A and B viruses circulate simultaneously in most regions.

During the past week, 53% of those who fell ill with the flu and COVID-19 were children.

Fatal cases due to flu complications were found in Kyiv, Khmelnytskyi, Lviv, Rivne, and Zhytomyr regions.

“The death of a 10-year-old child was recorded in the Rivne region. Another 18-year-old girl died in the Zhytomyr region. All the deceased did not have preventive vaccinations against the flu,” Ihor Kuzin said.

At the same time, he added that the peak incidence of ARVI, influenza and COVID-19 is behind us. Currently, the epidemiological threshold has been exceeded only in Chernivtsi region.

During the week, the incidence of the disease decreased by 16% among adults and by 18% among children. We predict further improvement of the situation from March.” – said Igor Kuzin.

Commenting on the incidence of COVID-19, the health doctor noted that at the beginning of the epidemic season, 9-10 thousand cases of the disease were recorded per week. Currently – about 2 thousand.

The Omicron strain circulates mainly in Ukraine, says Ihor Kuzin.

He reminded that a micron-specific vaccine against COVID-19, which is used for preventive vaccinations, is available in Ukraine. You can get it free of charge at vaccination points.

Vaccination against influenza can be done throughout the epidemic season, but it is desirable to do it before it begins, or at the beginning, in October, says the health doctor.

He reminded that flu vaccines are designed to protect against both influenza A and B strains. It can be purchased at a pharmacy chain.

We previously reported that vaccination against COVID-19 has saved more than 1.4 million lives in Europe.
