Polar scientists from the “Akademik Vernadskyi” research station are expecting a real baby boom on Galindez Island in mid-January. So far, more than 750 subantarctic penguin chicks have hatched there.
According to the calculations of Vadym Tkachenko, a biologist of the 28th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition, this is 16% of the total number of eggs laid on Galindez Island, the National Antarctic Science Center reports.
“So it is still too early to talk about a real baby boom. According to the scientist, it will begin in mid-January, when the number of babies should increase sharply.” – they say in the National Academy of Sciences.
Among the penguins, there are very tiny ones, and there are those that have grown up and are already catching up with their parents in size. There are six such “adult” chicks on the island. They hatched from the first eggs laid in early November.

Vadym Tkachenko predicts that very soon these penguins will go to the “nursery”.
Other cubs will remain in the nest for several weeks under the constant care of one of the parents.
We will remind, near “Vernadskyi” cubs of Dominican martins and arctic terns were also born.
