The dictionary of modern Ukrainian language and slang “Myslovo” called “mobilization” the word of the year 2023.

This was reported on the project website.

As the compilers of the dictionary explained, the term was at the center of public debate throughout the year, but the peak interest in it was recorded in December, when the government introduced a high-profile bill on mobilization to the parliament.

The authors of “Myslovo” explained that the word “mobilization” displaced another candidate – “counteroffensive”. Other contenders for word of the year are also related to war.

The compilers of the dictionary singled out, in particular, the following:

  • “evasive” – a man who evades mobilization; also the country’s political leadership, which refuses to take responsibility for difficult decisions and puts the blame on the military;
  • “eggs for 17 hryvnias” – a symbol of corruption in the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine;
  • “blockade/unblockade” – related to Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian seaports, as well as the unfriendly actions of Polish transporters and farmers blocking the border;
  • “positional war” – this term became popular after the publication of an article by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valery Zaluzhny about the transition of the war to a new stage;
  • “drone” – due to the sharp increase in the use of drones, in particular FPV, which had a significant impact on the course of hostilities this year.

AI (artificial intelligence) was the only word from the global context in this list, although its presence is related to the integration of AI into military systems, the authors emphasized.

The dictionary “Myslovo” was created in 2012 to record neologisms, slang and other manifestations of the modern Ukrainian language. It is supplemented with new tokens by users – ordinary Ukrainians.

“Myslovo” chose the eleventh word of the year. Popularity and social significance are the main criteria for its selection.

In 2022, “Myslovo” chose the phrase “Russian military ship, go to hell” as the word of the year.
