A second case of rabies in domestic cats was recorded in the Lviv Region

Quarantine restrictions due to rabies were introduced in the village of Popeli of the Lviv region and a 5-kilometer zone.
A 4-year-old half-breed cat bit the landlady and her son, and then died, the Drohobytsk District Military Administration reports.
This is the second case of rabies in a domestic cat in Drohobych region.
“The state emergency anti-epizootic commission at the Drohobytsk RVA imposed a two-month quarantine in the village of Popel of the Boryslav community and the 5-km zone of the village of Yasenytsia – Silna”– they say in RVA.

Quarantine restrictions will be in effect for 2 months – until January 22, 2024 inclusive, provided there are no new cases of the disease.
The previous case of rabies in the district occurred in a domestic cat, which bit the hand of the owner, a resident of Drohobych, on November 12, and died two days later.
As a reminder, rabies is an acute infectious disease of animals and humans caused by the neurotropic rabies virus (rabies virus) from the genus Lyssavirus. This virus affects the central nervous system and is transmitted from infected mammals.
In addition to a bite, rabies can be contracted if the saliva of a sick animal gets on the damaged skin or mucous membrane.
In the contact way, people are most often infected by cats and dogs – from among the domestic fauna, and in the wild – by foxes and wolves.
The initial symptoms of rabies are fever and pain, as well as unusual or unexplained tingling, pricking, or burning sensations at the site of the injury. After the onset of symptoms, the disease almost always ends fatally.
In the process of spreading the virus through the central nervous system, progressive fatal inflammation of the brain and spinal cord develops, say the Center for Public Health.
If not treated immediately, rabies has a 100% fatality rate. Be sure to consult a doctor!
