About the founding of the private rehabilitation center “Modrychi”: “This is not a business project, it was an emotion!”

Olga, a doctor, candidate of medical sciences, founder of one of the first domestic restorative treatment centers “Modrychi”, tells about the path of development of rehabilitation medicine in Ukraine and how to be the first where you need to take responsibility and learn as quickly as possible Miller. “It was definitely not a business project. But it all started with a few rooms in an ill-equipped sanatorium near Truskavets. Back in 2014, with the appearance of the first wounded in the Lviv military hospital, where I worked as an ultrasound doctor, I came to understand the importance of rehabilitation. After stabilization, the young men remained immobilized, with catheters, probes, ventilators. Where do they go next? Then the idea arose to create a place where they could stay after the hospital to restore lost functions or learn to live in new circumstances. But the challenge was that rehabilitation is a completely different branch of medicine. In Soviet and post-Soviet medicine, there was no such direction, just as there was no systematic training of specialists. A private medical institution with such a complex profile was definitely not a business project. It’s an emotion! 8 years ago, when “Modrychi” started work, there was practically no rehabilitation medicine in Ukraine. There was also no one to ask or look into. Today, specialists from all over Ukraine train here. – What did the rehabilitation center look like 8 years ago, when it opened? – We started with an experimental model, arranging 6 rooms for patients, one and a half halls for classes and a swimming pool in the building of the former sanatorium. We could accept from 6 to 12 patients, depending on the complexity. For comparison, today there are 110 patients at the same time, 12 of whom are in intensive care. We gradually grew in our ability to provide quality living and full-fledged restorative treatment. – How was it possible to solve the problem of lack of specialists for rehabilitation? – In the military hospital, I was lucky to meet a team of rehabilitators who had a high-quality education, the greatest, at that time, experience and knowledge of the best world rehabilitation practices. We created a working group and jointly developed a model of the future rehabilitation center. Another discovery of mine is related to the team: no single super specialist, even an invited genius, will give the same result as the coordinated work of the entire team: from the junior medical staff to doctors and rehabilitators. Rehabilitation is a team effort. No specialist alone will give the desired result, only – together. What is the key difference? – Specialists who work with ordinary patients and who manage a patient with limited motor activity are different professions, they require different training. For example, one of the tasks of a urologist in rehabilitation medicine may be to gradually transfer a patient from a catheter to natural, independent urination, in simple terms – to teach a person to go to the toilet on his own again. We gradually selected specialists for our team who had a clear understanding of the field in which they were going to work, and were ready for constant training and development. Today, our team includes three doctors specializing in physical rehabilitation medicine, three more are studying, and six anesthesiologists with a rehabilitation profile. Junior medical staff also have highly specialized skills in accompanying our patients. To help patients in everyday life, we invented and introduced a separate specialization – care workers who are proficient in transfer techniques, prevention of bedsores, and features of tube feeding. – How did you find funds to create a rehabilitation center? Did they pay off? – Rehabilitation is quite expensive, and the industry is very specific, not as attractive from the point of view of profitability as aesthetic medicine or health and recreation complexes. To start the rehabilitation center, our investors took out a loan of about 1 million dollars. This gave us a safety margin of 5 years, before the start of the covid pandemic. “Every” years have become a test of our ability. And we did pretty well. We have a large percentage of beneficiaries who undergo rehabilitation with the funds collected by our foundation or friendly foundations, due to the reduction of the cost of stay to the cost price. But after the first years of balancing, we managed to reach a model in which the rehabilitation center supports itself, earns for its expenses and future development needs. – Is rehabilitation a chance for a miracle? – Sometimes it seems that there is a magic pill that would solve all problems. But it doesn’t work like that. Only when rehabilitation goals and planning match the patient’s potential will the outcome be anything but disappointing. It is important to remember that the time between the injury and the beginning of rehabilitation largely determines the effectiveness of rehabilitation. This is confirmed by world experience. A week or a year has passed – the results will be radically different. In the countries we want to emulate – the USA, Canada, Israel, rehabilitation is a mandatory component of the treatment process and begins immediately after the stabilization of vital indicators. – Is there a request for your experience among colleagues from the medical field? The topic of restorative medicine and rehabilitation centers is quite relevant now. – Yes, there is such a request. From the first days. Rehabilitation students are constantly undergoing practice with us. Requests for internships of multidisciplinary teams from other medical institutions have become more frequent. The Minister of Health visited our center in July last year, in fact, with a request that we become a support base for training rehabilitation teams. For us, it is a great responsibility and pride that we can share knowledge and experience. Today, “Modrychi” is one of the most powerful neurorehabilitation centers in which more than 4,000 patients from Ukraine and abroad have received help after spinal and brain injuries, strokes, heart attacks, and cancer. Once upon a time in “Modrychy” they dreamed of a Guldmann pool lift. And about inclusive wide elevators. Everything already works and helps in rehabilitation. Today, dreams are about an intensive care unit. – What is “Modrich” missing today? What do you dream about? – Dreams about the development of “Modrych” are finally coming true. This was the case with the “Guldman” lift for our swimming pool, elevators for convenient wheelchair entry, adaptation of the territory, new ventilators or infusion machines, exercise machines… Today, our big dream is a new building for intensive care, so that we can receive more patients of this type . If rehabilitation begins in the intensive care unit, when the patient is in a coma, the chances of returning functions and a full life are quite high. And we have the right team and experience working with the most complex patients. We are ready.
