American artist, sculptor Richard Serra died

The famous American artist and sculptor Richard Serra died in New York at the age of 86. He is best known for his monumental works of iron and steel. His work has been awarded many prestigious awards, including the “Golden Lion” of the Venice Biennale.

Serra was born in 1938 in San Francisco. His mother came from a family of Jewish emigrants from Odessa, his father came to the United States from Spain and worked at the shipyards, where young Serra got acquainted with iron processing. Student trips to Europe instilled in him a taste for the fashionable minimalism. Serra’s own style – large-scale and at the same time laconic sculptures – soon became recognizable.

Serra was noticed early by gallerists, but he preferred to make works not for exhibitions in halls, but for public spaces. They decorate the main atrium of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, squares in London and New York, installed in the desert in Qatar and on an artificial mountain in Essen, Germany, and in many other public places.

In addition to sculpture, Serra was also involved in drawing, printmaking, video art, and cinema.
