Ukrainian polar explorers managed to film a unique video of a humpback whale playing head-on with the Noosphere icebreaker in the Antarctic.

The ship itself was passing through the Penola Strait in the area of ​​the Ukrainian station “Akademik Vernadskyi”, the National Science Center said.

Based on the proportions of the whale’s body, scientists determined that he is still a teenager, so his mother must have been somewhere nearby.

The video with the amazing hunchback was shot by senior assistant captain Andrii Starish. And his colleagues Karina Vyshniakova and Vadym Tkachenko told interesting facts about this Antarctic mammal!

Humpback whales (or humpbacks) got their name from the dorsal fin, which gives the body a humpback shape, and also due to the habit of strongly arching the back in the area of ​​this fin during diving.

An adult humpback whale is up to 18 meters long and weighs up to 40 tons. It is interesting that the height of a person does not exceed the size of the tail fin of this animal.
