16-year-old Diana Bourdain from the Chernivtsi region became the record holder of Ukraine in the nomination “The youngest Ukrainian woman who confirmed her knowledge of the English language at the C-1 Academic level”.
This was reported by the head of the National Register of Records, Lana Vetrova.
Diana is a student of the 11-B class of a reference institution of general secondary education (ZZSO) of the I-III level in the city of Zastavna, Chernivtsi region.
“She is only 16 years old, and this level of knowledge of the English language is usually acquired by 20-22-year-old graduates of higher educational institutions in case of successful passing of the exam. After all, this is the academic level and the fifth indicator on the CEFR scale – pan-European foreign language competence” – noted in the National Register of Records.

This knowledge makes it possible to recognize the hidden meaning of the language, use specific vocabulary and terminology, make simultaneous professional translations, as well as effectively use the English language in academic circles and confidently communicate in a scientific environment, the National Register adds.
As Diana told in the comment “UP. Life”, she became interested in foreign languages since childhood. At school, she began to study English more intensively.
“I have good foreign language teachers at school. By the way, in addition to English, I studied German as well. About 4 years ago, I additionally started studying English with a tutor, and I believe that it was she who helped me reach the level I have now. About a year ago, I passed the language proficiency exam, which was held in Poland. But the fact that I got on the record was a real surprise for me“, the girl says.
Representatives of the National Registry planned to announce the results of Ukraine’s record at Diana’s native school during an English class. However, it was at this time that the air alarm sounded.
“As I found out later, I was supposed to bring the record certificate to the English class at school, but the air anxiety interrupted everything. Therefore, it was handed to me later, but also in English class“, the schoolgirl continues.
Together with the Certificate of Record, Diana was awarded a grant for free study at a private university in any faculty of her choice. Diana admitted that she was thinking about choosing between the two faculties.
“I am thinking of entering the Faculty of Law or international relations. While hesitating. But in fact, I am very pleased that I am still studying at school and have already been called to study at such a prestigious university“, he answers.
Diana adds that she does not plan to rest on her laurels and believes that she will be able to use her potential for the benefit of her native country in the future.
“I don’t know how life will turn out, but I would really like to help Ukraine“, the girl concludes.
