An outbreak of scarlet fever was recorded in Odesa region. It is associated with another cyclical rise.

As reported by the regional center for disease control and prevention, the last cyclical increase in Ukraine was registered in 2014 – when 355 people fell ill.

In 2024, 61 cases of scarlet fever among children were recorded, including one fatality due to complications.

The agency reminds that 182 cases of scarlet fever were registered in 2023, which is 2.6 times more than in 2022.

Last year, children under the age of 17 suffered from the disease, the age group from 5 to 9 years was the most vulnerable – 56% of all cases of the disease.

There is no specific treatment for scarlet fever, according to the Odesa Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Prevention of the disease consists in early detection and isolation of the source of infection. Patients with scarlet fever should be isolated for up to 24 hours after receiving the first dose of the antibiotic. If no antibiotic was prescribed, isolation should continue for 21 days.
