Artificial intelligence chatbots outperform average humans in creativity – study

A new study shows that chatbots with artificial intelligence can outperform the average person in creative tasks, writes Sci Tech Daily. The statement directly applies to AI chatbots of a large language model. It is a type of artificial intelligence algorithm that uses deep learning techniques and huge data sets to understand, generalize, generate and predict new content. It was they who performed better in creative tasks such as brainstorming about alternative uses of ordinary objects. At the same time, people who got the highest results in such tasks are still better than chatbots. It emphasizes the ability to generate different ideas or solutions for a specific task. It is assessed by Alternative Use Tasks (AUT). In them, participants have to come up with as many different ways of using an everyday object as possible in a short period of time. When evaluating, 4 different categories are taken into account: free ownership; flexibility; originality; improvement During the study, scientists Mika Koivisto and Simone Grassini compared the answers of 256 people with the answers of 3 AI chatbots: ChatGPT3, ChatGPT4 and Copy.Ai). Four items were taken for AUT: a rope, a box, a pencil, and a candle. Scientists assessed originality using semantic distance – that is, how much the answer is related to the original use of the object. Creativity was also taken into account. Semantic distance was evaluated on a scale from 0 to 2 using a computational method, and creativity was evaluated by evaluators who did not see the authors of the answers – from 1 to 5. In the first case, chatbots received higher scores – 0.95 versus 0.91. It was the same with creativity – 2.91 against 2.47. But the scientists also noticed a wide range in both indicators. Although the person received the minimum points lower than AI, the maximum points were still higher. And the human’s best answer beat every chatbot’s best answer in 7 out of 8 categories. The authors of the study, published in full in Scientific Reports, emphasized that they only looked at performance in one task. However, studying this issue in the future will help integrate AI into the human creative process. Recently, it became known that AI can even outperform students in some types of exams. We will remind you that earlier we talked about the future role of artificial intelligence in the educational process.
