In Lviv, a 49-year-old man had a tumor the size of a rugby ball removed, saving his leg from amputation. He lived with this neoplasm in his thigh for almost 30 years.

As reported in the First Medical Association of Lviv, lipoma was discovered in Yevgeny Plekhanov from Lviv when he was 20 years old. This is a benign formation that develops from adipose tissue cells.

“The formation covered the surrounding tissues of the upper inner third of the thigh – muscles, nerves and blood vessels. To remove it completely would mean conducting a risky intervention for the patient. He could lose sensation in his entire leg.

Therefore, at that time, the doctors of one of the city hospitals removed only part of the lipoma. And they also warned the young man: the tumor may continue to grow“, the medical facility notes.

For the last 15 years, Yevgeny lived in Italy, where he worked as a driver. The tumor really got bigger over the years, but he was unable to undergo an examination at the local hospitals.

With the beginning of a full-scale war, the man returned to Ukraine. Many volunteers. Due to regular loads on the legs, the pain in the upper part of the thigh did not subside and radiated to the groin. The extremity began to fray. Then Yevgeny turned to specialists for help.

The doctors gave him an MRI and found out that the lipoma had almost tripled in size since the first surgery – to a size of 24×13 cm.

It sprouted in the upper third of the thigh between the muscles, vessels, nerves and tendons in the area from the groin down. The formation squeezed the vascular-nerve bundle and worsened the blood flow in the arteries of the leg.

“To prevent a partial or even complete stoppage of blood flow in the limb, which would threaten amputation, we separated parts of the tumor from the nerves and arteries, and then removed it completely without complications for the patient”, explains vascular surgeon, head of the interventional radiology department Oleksandr Golub.

The very next day Yevgeny started walking. He got rid of discomfort and pain.

Currently, the man continues to volunteer – he helps our defenders on the front lines, doctors say.
