Attitudes towards Russian-speaking Ukrainians have worsened: a survey on ethnic prejudice

The lowest level of ethnic prejudice in Ukraine exists against Ukrainians and Poles. The worst attitude was recorded towards Russians and Belarusians living in their countries.
The attitude towards Russian-speaking Ukrainians has also worsened over the year, according to a study by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.
Sociologists measured the social distance of respondents with ethnic groups. Namely, how close a relationship they are willing to allow with representatives of each of the groups (where 1 is “family member”, 7 is “wouldn’t be allowed into Ukraine”).
The smallest social distance is in relation to Ukrainian-speaking Ukrainians (index – 2.03). Then there are Poles and Russian-speaking Ukrainians (2.93 and 2.95). Most of the respondents are ready to admit that the representatives of these groups can be members of their family or close friends.

Canadians and Americans (3.04 and 3.07) and Germans, French and Jews – residents of Ukraine (from 3.32 to 3.39) ranked next with a small difference.
The greatest social distance is observed for Africans (4.69), Roma (4.75), Russians – residents of Ukraine (4.96) and Belarusians – residents of Belarus (5.30).
The last place with the greatest social distance was occupied by Russians living in the Russian Federation (6.38). 80% of respondents would not allow them even as tourists.
Compared to 2022, attitudes towards Canadians, Americans, Germans and French have improved. Social distance with Poles has not changed (the study was conducted before the blocking of the Ukrainian-Polish border).
Over the past year, only the attitude towards Russian-speaking Ukrainians has worsened.
“It is possible that the deterioration of the attitude towards Russians – residents of Ukraine and towards Russian-speaking Ukrainians is due to the fact that before the beginning of the large-scale war there was a higher percentage of those who support pro-Russian parties among them than among Ukrainian-speaking Ukrainians. But now the situation has changed radically.
All polls by KMIS and other sociological companies after February 24, 2022 testify that although citizens of Ukraine who are ethnic Russians and Russian-speaking Ukrainians differ somewhat in their views, in fact most of them are quite pro-Ukrainian-minded citizens. – noted the general director of KMIS, Volodymyr Paniotto.
If we compare the data for 2013, the attitude of the residents of Ukraine towards Russians and Belarusians has worsened the most. However, the situation changed only after a full-scale invasion. On the contrary, residents of Ukraine began to treat Poles, Americans and Canadians better.

In general, the level of xenophobia in Ukraine is currently average (3.7). Residents of the country would not like to see most of the ethnic groups as their family members and close friends, but they can perceive them as neighbors, work colleagues and residents of Ukraine.
