Autumn holidays 2023: when will they start in schools in different regions of Ukraine

Traditionally, at the end of October, schoolchildren go for a week of rest – autumn vacation.

According to the Law of Ukraine “On Comprehensive General Secondary Education”, during the school year students must have at least 30 days of rest: autumn, winter and spring vacations.

The dates of these vacations are determined by the administration of each school individually. Regional education departments can only recommend when schoolchildren should go on vacation. Decisions are made in accordance with the security situation and the beginning of the heating season.

Several communities this year chose the option when students will not go on autumn vacation, instead they will rest longer in winter.

“UP.Zhyttia” found out when the autumn vacations begin and how long they will last in different regions.

Kyiv

Autumn holidays in Kyiv schools will start on October 23 and last until October 29 including. This was announced by the Deputy Chairman of the KMDA Valentyn Mondryivskyi.

“According to the recommended structure of the academic year, autumn vacations for schoolchildren will begin in Kyiv on October 23. There are currently no reasons for their postponement. Until the vacations begin, educational institutions in Kyiv will continue to work in face-to-face, mixed and remote formats, taking into account the security situation and following the algorithm actions in the event of an air alert announcement before the start of training”– said Valentyn Mondryivskyi.

Kyiv region

The Kyiv Regional State Administration responded to the request of “UP.Zhyttia” that each educational institution independently decides whether and when students will go on autumn vacation.

Example, in the Pereyaslav community, schoolchildren will not go on autumn vacation, instead, the winter ones will last longer, said Petro Yarmolenko, head of the education department of the Pereyaslav City Council.

Volyn region

Pupils of the Volyn region are recommended to go on vacation from October 30 to November 5reported the head of the Department of Education and Science of the Volyn Regional State Administration Natalia Matviyuk in a comment to the journalists of “Volyn News Service”.

“Since territorial communities and educational institutions have autonomy, they themselves decide when to start and end them.” – added Matviyuk.

Lviv region

Autumn vacations will also take place in schools of the Lviv region, but the communities have chosen different dates.

Schoolchildren from the Komarniv community will go on vacation before everyone else, the vacation there will start already on October 16. Other communities for the most part will start vacation on October 23 or 30noted in the Department of Education of the Lviv Regional State Administration.

At the same time, four communities will not have an autumn vacation at all. They decided to extend the winter holidays to save energy resources.

Ternopil region

In the Ternopil region, each school will individually make decisions about the autumn holidays. Schoolchildren in most Ternopil schools have been studying on Saturdays since the beginning of September, the mayor reported on local radio.

Among the reasons: increased morbidity in the fall and the possible quarantine and security situation, namely the likely lack of electricity in the winter due to attacks on the energy infrastructure.

Ivano-Frankivsk region

Department of Education and Science of the Ivano-Frankivsk Community recommended educational institutions to organize the educational process in two semesters and to make longer vacations in winterthat is, to study until Christmas, which this year will be celebrated for the first time throughout the country on December 25, the director of the department of education and science of the city council, Victoria Drotyanko, said in a comment to “UP.Zhyttia”.

“But when the autumn and spring vacations should begin – the management of each institution decides independently, and educational institutions can simply rely on recommendations from the Ministry of Education and the Department of Education.” – added Victoria Drotyanko.

The decision on a longer winter vacation was made based on forecasts of a severe winter and possible power outages. This recommendation was discussed with the heads of educational institutions, options for a week’s vacation for primary school students are being considered separately.

Khmelnytskyi region

The holidays will begin for most institutions of the Khmelnytskyi community from October 23 and will last until the 29.

Some institutions will go on vacation in two stages: while some students of the school will study, others will rest, the head of the department of education and science Olha Kshanovska told the local publication Vsim.

One of the schools in the community decided not to go on autumn vacation at all.

Vinnytsia region

Most schools in the region will go on autumn vacation from October 23 to 29.

Some schools decided to start the holidays later – from October 30 to November 5.

However, several communities decided to add a week of autumn vacations to the winter vacation, so in these schools until the end of the academic semester, students will study without rest, informed “UP.Zhyttia” in the Department of Education and Science of the Vinnytsia Regional State Administration.

Zhytomyr region

Pupils will go to Zhytomyr OTG schools during the autumn holidays from October 21 to 29, informed the Department of Education of Zhytomyr City Council.

Kirovohrad region

Schools of three communities in Kirovohrad region refused the autumn holidays and transferred them for the winter.

In particular, these are 36 schools of Kropyvnytskyi, 23 schools of the Ketrysaniv community and 4 schools of Kropyvnytskyi district. Svitlana Yankul, head of the department of preschool, general secondary and out-of-school education of the regional department of education, informed Suspilny about this.

Poltava

In the schools of the Poltava region, students are recommended to go on autumn vacation from October 23 to 29.

Cherkasy

Back in August of this year, the deputy mayor of the Cherkasy City Council announced that schoolchildren would go on autumn vacation from October 30 to November 5.

Dnipro

Autumn vacation will be held in Dnipro from October 30 to November 5reports the Department of Humanitarian Policy of the Dnipro City Council.

Kharkiv

The autumn holidays will begin in Kharkiv on October 23 and will last until October 29.

The vast majority of general educational institutions of the region have decided to start the autumn holidays also from October 23.

Chernihiv

Several schools in Chernihiv will have autumn vacations from October 23 to 31in particular in Chernihiv Secondary School No. 3 and No. 7.

Rivne

Lyceums and gymnasiums of Rivne will go on autumn vacation from October 23 to 29reported in the city’s education department.

Chernivtsi

Part of Chernivtsi schools will go on vacation from October 23 to 27. Another part – from October 30 to November 3informed the Chernivtsi City Department of Education.

Mukacheve, Transcarpathian region

According to the decisions of the pedagogical councils of educational institutions and the recommendations of the Department of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports, Mukachevo schoolchildren will not go on autumn vacation, instead they will rest for a month inwinter from December 22 to January 22informed the city council.
