Award for possible plagiarism. Translator Dmytro Drozdovsky became the laureate of the Rylsky Prize

On Wednesday, January 24, the State Committee for Television and Radio Broadcasting of Ukraine announced the winners of the Maksym Rylsky translation award. They were Volodymyr Litvinov and Dmytro Drozdovskyi. One of the members of the award jury – a Ukrainian scientist and translator – is contesting the decision of the latter’s victory Maxim Strikha.

Dmytro Drozdovskyi, previously accused of plagiarism, won in the nomination for translating the works of Ukrainian classics and modern authors into languages ​​of the nations of the world. He created the English translation of the collection “Irpin – My Home”, the authors of which are children (Samit-Knyga Publishing House).

Together with him, it was created by Andrew Sheppard, the editor of the magazine of the British-Russian Society “East-West Review”. He specializes in translation from the Russian language, and the magazine’s editors support “good Russians”.

The literary critic noted that Drozdovsky probably used Google Translate in his translation. She also created comparative tables with sentences in which there is almost no difference between the author’s and machine translation.

“At first glance, it is obvious: people who know English well were not involved in the creation of this translation, because there is a full bingo of mistakes by a non-native speaker, from a very strange choice of inappropriate synonyms to a very unnatural order of words in a sentence and so on.”, – emphasized Yaroslava Strikha.

Earlier, on January 24, the Chitomo publication published a text by Maksym Strikha, in which he explains why the translation does not meet the requirements of the award. In particular, the professional quality of the translation raised questions, and the book was not published outside of Ukraine.

Another publication, the anthology of Ukrainian poetry from Shevchenko to the present day, “Solar Clarinets” in Italian, translated by two Italian women, Laura Garavaglia and Annarita Tavani, and published by the Italian publishing house “I quadrni del bardi” was not recognized in the vote.

“The committee was guided by noble considerations and sought first of all to recognize the children of Irpen, who collectively created a truly very important document of our tragic age. But instead, he noted the work of two translators, which does not give the slightest grounds (in terms of complexity, artistic level, public publicity) for such an award“, explained Stricha.

At the end, Maksym Strikha noted that he announced his resignation at the committee meeting.

As reported by the head of the State Television and Radio Committee Oleg Nalyvaiko in a comment for “Detektor Media”, he will not sign the order on awarding the Rylsky Prize until all the circumstances are clarified.

Dmytro Drozdovsky himself published a response to the accusations in the magazine “Vsesvit”. The translator is also the chief editor of the publication.

In the publication, he emphasizes that the publication “Irpin – My Home” is “anomalous”, because it was created and translated in the conditions of war. He also thanked Andrew Sheppard for the joint work, said that the British editor broke off “all relations with the Russian world” in 2022.

And this book is the stories of children, recording the horror, tragedies, and true pain of young souls who saw the horrors of war… who experienced what you wouldn’t wish on anyone… Maksim Rylsky felt the times and spirit of the times… Today this book is a business card of the Ukrainian tragedy in the world , which can hit the reader’s perception of foreigners more than the translated poetry of the 20th century…“, Drozdovsky wrote.

Maksym Rylsky Prize – Ukrainian annual literary award. It is awarded to writers and poets in two nominations: for the translation into Ukrainian of the works of prominent foreign authors, as well as for the translation of the works of Ukrainian classics and modern authors into the languages ​​of the nations of the world.

The prize money is 20,000 hryvnias.

Dmytro Drozdovskyi and accusations of plagiarism

Translator and literary critic Dmytro Drozdovsky is not the first to face criticism due to translation and plagiarism from various sources.

In 2018, plagiarism was discovered in one of his works – in the monograph, most of the chapters were copied from English-language sources, the conclusions were only partially written off. The translator had to defend this work as his doctoral thesis.

Already at the beginning of February 2022, Drozdovsky was accused of plagiarizing the work of the director of “Dom Franko” and scientist Bohdan Tyholaz. Then Dmytro Drozdovsky used parts of the text without indicating the direct authorship of the source. On this occasion, Bohdan Tykholaz wrote a lengthy post on social networks with a comparative analysis of the two texts.
