Transgender soldier Helen Mark was beaten on August 15 in the center of Lviv. A strange man suddenly approached her and began to speak aggressively. Helen asked him to leave, and the next second the man punched her in the nose with the words, “What are you, f**dar?”” – the public organization “KyivPride” told about this incident. On August 16, the police opened criminal proceedings for the beating. Subsequently, the Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets reacted to the situation. “I would like to note that no one can be discriminated against on any grounds. All people are free and equal in their dignity and rights. Therefore, a letter was sent to the Main Directorate of the National Police of Ukraine, asking them to take the necessary response measures, and also to ensure a quick , an effective and, first of all, impartial investigation of this situation with a mandatory investigation of the probable motive of intolerance,” he wrote in the comments under the “KyivPride” post. On September 25, it became known that the police had identified the attacker. He turned out to be a 22-year-old native of Rivne region. “The extra person verbally insulted the victim, after which he punched and kicked her several times in the face. He is charged with intentional actions aimed at directly restricting rights based on gender, other beliefs, combined with violence (part 2 of Article 161 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine)” , the prosecutor’s office reported. As the spokeswoman of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, Adriana Dmytrenko, said in a comment for “UP. Life”, the accused previously had no criminal record. He faces punishment in the form of a fine of 500 to 1,000 untaxed minimum income of citizens or imprisonment for a term of two to five years.
