In Lviv, a 9-month-old baby became a posthumous donor for a 5-year-old girl

A 5-year-old girl underwent a kidney transplant in Lviv. The donor for her was a 9-month-old baby. This is reported in the Western Ukrainian Specialized Children’s Medical Center. 5-year-old Snizhana from Sokoliv region (Lviv region) has been treated for kidney failure since 2018. Doctors diagnosed her with hemolytic-uremic syndrome. “This is a disease that is accompanied by a decrease in hemoglobin, platelets, constant diarrhea, permanent fever. As a result of changes in the body, small thrombi form in the kidneys, which block the work of the kidneys, and accordingly they stop working,” said Roman Andrunevich, a pediatric nephrologist at the center. Her only chance for recovery was a kidney transplant. The donor for Snizhana was a 9-month-old girl with severe liver disease. When the baby was declared brain dead, the parents agreed to donation. “The unified information system identified our little patient as a potential recipient. The Center’s laboratory confirmed immunological compatibility. Our specialists quickly transported the donor organ from Kyiv to Lviv and performed a life-saving operation,” the center said. The baby posthumously became the youngest donor in Ukraine. According to doctors, the operation was successful and the kidney started working right on the operating table. As Roman Andrunevich reported in a comment to ZAXID.NET, Snizhana has been transferred from the intensive care unit to the ward. The girl feels well. In general, since 2021, 13 kidney transplants have already been performed at the Western Ukrainian Specialized Children’s Medical Center.
